Double Handed and Switch Fly Rods

Double Handed and Switch Fly Rods

Double Handed or ‘Spey’ fly rods are most often associated with salmon fishing and especially on rivers where the banks and terrain make it difficult to employ overhead casting when using single-handed fly rods.  They are typically in the range of 13ft – 16ft long and AFTM Wts. from  #9 to #11.
The ‘Switch’ Rod  is essentially a modern ‘hybrid’ between a Single-Handed Fly Rod and a Double-Handed Fly Rod.  It is something of a North American development, the popular understanding of the term being a fly rod of between 10ft  to 12ft long with at least an extended, or extendable Butt Section on the handle below the reel.  This gives you the option to grip this lower ‘handle’ with your other hand, basically turning the rod into a ‘Double-Hander’ when or if conditions or tactics change.
This makes it a very adaptable rod which can be used for a wider range of locations and species.
It has even found favour amongst Competition and Loch Style Boat anglers as it spreads the exertion in casting, etc., over two arms instead of just one which allows anglers to fish easier, over longer periods.
