fly fishing polarized sunglasses

Polarized sunglasses are not merely a fashionable fishing accessory, but for a fly fisherman they are absolutely essential.

Most coarse, carp and sea fishermen tend to use polarized sunglasses to filter the sun’s U/V rays and glare to reduce eye-strain, headaches, and so on, but for a fly fisherman, a good pair of polarized sunglasses are an essential piece of equipment for many more reasons. A good quality pair of, preferably, ‘wrap-around style’ polarized sunglasses will:

  • Reduce U/V rays as well as direct and reflected glare off the water’s surface and thus minimise eye-strain.
  • Even on a cloudy day, polarized glasses reduce reflections so you can still see small surface flies clearer.
  • Polarized sunglasses also allow Trout fishermen to ‘see’ more easily into and under the water and so sight and target their quarry.
  • Wrap around style polarized sunglasses give additional protection to your eyes from wayward flies in a gusting wind.

Polarized sunglasses are often available in different colours. So what colour is best?

  • Black/Grey – A good choice for ‘big sky’ conditions or really bright, clear, sunny days when the sun is at its highest.
  • Brown/Amber – A good choice on mixed sunny/cloudy days and seems to be a more ‘relaxing’ tone.
  • Yellow Tints – For reduced light such as dawn and dusk sessions as they actually let more, albeit, polarized light through.

Whatever the style or tint, a good pair of polarized sunglasses with a lanyard to keep them handy will be one of the best and most useful items of ‘tackle’ you will ever use!
